Good Governance

This can’t be done alone, and there will usually be at least 3 people who have governance responsibilities. Whether called committee members, trustees, directors or something else, the organisation’s ‘top decision-makers’ should be aware of their governance role and the responsibilities it brings.

Roles and Responsibilities

The roles and responsibilities people have vary depending on the size of an organisation and whether it has any paid staff.

But they all ensure that the organisation has a clear purpose (vision and mission) and that the work the organisation carries out contributes to this. They also ensure that the organisation has enough resources, and that these are used well. They understand and comply with their governing document and any relevant laws. A governing document can be called a constitution, Articles of Association or set of rules, depending on your legal structure.

The decision-makers come together on a regular basis to have discussions and make decisions collectively. Everyone has equal responsibility for these decisions, and they are recorded in a written record, usually called the minutes.

Small, volunteer-run community groups usually have decision-makers who are also involved in organising and delivering its day-to-day activities or services.

Larger organisations with the resources for paid staff, have decision-makers who focus on strategy and over-sight, ensuring laws are being met and policies are up to date and being followed.

A well-run board or committee is essential for the success of an organisation.
