About Brighton and Hove Black Women's Group

Brighton and Hove Black* Women’s Group (B&HBWG) was established in 1987 as a self-help group with members across Sussex to ensure Black women’s needs are heard and met. We are a community sector organisation fighting racism practice in the community, public and private sectors at regional, national and international level. The Ubuntu principle ‘I am because we are’ means we also work on issues for Black men as we believe that Black women are oppressed if Black men who are our fathers, brothers, sons and allies are oppressed. Our work with men is undertaken as Sussex Racial Equality Action Project (Sussex REAP) and as Justice Afrikan* History (JAH). *‘Black’ for us includes people of African, Bangladeshi, Caribbean, Chinese, Indian, Middle Eastern and Pakistani origins ‘Afrikan’ is a Pan-Afrikan spelling which refers to the indigenous people of Afrika whether on the continent or in the Diaspora
