Brighton and Hove community resilience project update
This month our community resilience partnership project focusses on terrorism
Community Works is delivering a project to help Brighton and Hove communities prepare for risks they might face. The project is run in collaboration with the Trust for Developing Communities (TDC) and the Hangleton & Knoll Project.
This month’s focus is on terrorism. Although the risk to individuals is still very low, we’ve put together some resources to help community organisations stay alert and keep people safe.
We’re encouraging people and communities to:
- Stay alert, but not alarmed
- Be mindful of what’s happening around you, noticing anything that feels unusual
- If you’re a community group, ensuring that staff and volunteers know what to do if they have a concern
- Help people to think about how they would respond.
If something doesn’t feel right – whether that’s suspicious activity, an unattended item, or concerns about someone you know – the guidance is to trust your instincts and report it. In an emergency, always call 999, or you can report concerns confidentially via the Anti-Terrorist Hotline (0800 789 321).
There are a range of free resources available to help community organisations strengthen their awareness and planning, which we’d like to share should you like further support and guidance,
- Understanding the threat – ProtectUK overview of current risks
- Run, Hide, Tell guidance – what to do in the event of an incident – Protect UK
- Venues and Public Spaces guidance – improving safety in community buildings
- Evacuation, lockdown and safe spaces – planning your emergency response
- ACT (Action counters terrorism) Awareness e-learning – free training for staff and volunteers
- Guidance on identifying suspicious behaviour
The project is funded by the Sussex Resilience Forum and aims to ensure that people in Brighton & Hove are prepared for potential emergencies and that communities are resilient.
